                Showing you how much I
                love you.
                       GUMSU
Love indeed. You need to introduce
yourself to my parents before I
               believe you.
                       OLAMIDE
I am not scared of your parents. I’ve always requested that we visit your home but you’ll not give me the go ahead.
                       GUMSU
I needed to be sure before I let my parents meet you!

                          OLAMIDE
               And so…!
                         Gumsu
Let’s do it this way. We visit
your parents this week, next weekend
              We visit mine!
                         OLAMIDE
Why not? You are young, brilliant and diligent. Every father would want to have you as a son-In-law. Moreover, since I’m introducing you they would no doubt. My parents trust me to make the right decision.
                            OLAMIDE
               Marvelous! Splendid!
                            GUMSU
Tell me about your mummy. Is she
a good woman? Would she accept me?
                           OLAMIDE
              She would of course!
                           GUMSU
“Hajia” says, for a marriage to be
              successful the bride must
accept and be accepted by the
              husband’s mother.
                        OLAMIDE
My mother is a good hearted woman

                           OLUMIDE
…Just when I am beginning to enjoy the
Scenery! Campus life is not about
               Reading and studying you know.
                           GUMSU
              I hear, but excuse me.
                            OLAMIDE
Oh! You mean you’ll leave me
                   Here
                       GUMSU

                    MAMA
Gum…! What did you call her?

                     OLAMIDE
              No mama. Hausa! Not mollam.
                   MAMA
Ehn! we are saying the same thing!
                   OLAMIDE
             Mama
                   GUMSU
            Don’t worry it’s okay.
                  MAMA
            How are your parents?
Mama moves close to Gumsu they hug.
                 MAMA (CONTD)
Oh where did I put my manners?
           Let me get you water.
Mama goes to the kitchen comes out with a cup of water
Olamide wants to stop Gumsu from taking the drink.
                  GUMSU
            Don’t worry I’m at home.
Gumsu collects it and drinks it.
                 MAMA
That is my girl. Olamide this
           Is a good girl!
Mama hugs Gumsu they all laugh.
                 OLAMIDE

BABA(VOICE OVER)
Who seeks me?
OLAMIDE
 That is my father
(To GUMSU)
OLAMIDE(CONT)
Come here!
OLAMIDE holds GUMSU to himself. MAMA admires the picture BABA enters,
BABA
‘lami-The Boy When did you arrive
Olamide leaves GUMSU goes to prostrate to BABA
                   OLAMIDE
                   We are just entering, baba!
(In yoruba)
How was work at the farm?
                   BABA
Oh! What can we say? We are on it! Only the rain is becoming too much. If it persist the harvest may not be good this year.
GUMSU
Good afternoon sir!
BABA
Good afternoon my daughter. Olamide!

OLAMIDE
Yes baba. I’ve come … we’ve come so that the two of you, mummy and daddy can know her! This is Gumsu Balarabe. The girl I chose to marry! I want you to meet her before I go for my youth service!
Brief pause
BABA
Is she Hausa.
OLAMIDE
Does it matter? Baba, she is my choice.
BABA is silent he looks intently at GUMSU then at OLAMIDE
                   BABA
                   That is not the answer!
GUMSU
I am from Kano. Baba!
BABA
Don’t mind me my daughter. You are welcome to my house!
MAMA
Is she not beautiful?
BABA
Mama lamide
BABA signals MAMA.
MAMA
Let’s go to the kitchen
MAMA and GUMSU exit.
OLAMIDE
Times have changed ba-aa-ami! More over….
BABA
What about Boko Haram
OLAMIDE
That is a common enemy. Moreover, marriage is about the two parties not the family or the tribe! Gumsu loves me and I assure you, she is a good girl she is well brought up in Islamic traditions.
BABA
Marriage is about the couple man and woman! This is Africa the ultimate decision rests on the family. The family must investigate the other family before a marriage contract is finalized.
OLAMIDE
She wanted to see you and mama. That is why we are here, not be interrogated!
BABA
I can see! You love her deeply!
OLAMIDE
Don’t be scared baba. I assure you when you know her you would appreciate her as my choice.
MAMA and GUMSU enter the room
MAMA
Olamide you have chosen a good girl. My prayer is that she comes home early. Ba‘lamide, let’s hasten up for the introduction ceremony!
OLAMIDE
Baba did you hear that?
BABA
So you have been bought over by her charms!
GUMSU
Mama… it’s getting late, I should be on my way.
MAMA
So soon! Why the hurry? “O ti o”. You must eat before you go. Why not stay over?
OLAMIDE
She can’t mama. Her aunt is at the other end of town. You don’t want her to be offended, do you?
GUMSU
Don’t worry mama, I shall be here again another day before I travel back to Kano. I promise!
BABA
Good! May Allah be with you!
May He grant us the good in this life and in the hereafter!
GUMSU/OLAMIDE
 Amin.
GUMSU
Mama, take care of yourself and baba.
MAMA
I will oooh! My daughter! Ba’lamide let me see her to “Alakara” junction!
BABA
I hear! If you must see her of what would olamide be doing- “iya oko”! ‘Lamide “o jare” be sure you come back quickly!
Baba ‘lamide looks at them as they leave.
MAMA
Moving closer to baba
Are they  notbeautiful?
She scampers after them. Baba ‘lamide eyes her then prepares himself for the bathroom.

To GUMSU
HAJIA (CONTD.)

GUMSU scuttles OLAMIDE out of the house despite his faint reluctance.
MALLAM
Infact I know what to do! You see what makaranta has brought to my house. Let’s marry this girl off! “No my daughter must go to school”. Rubbish! I am marrying her off to tanko. Gumsu! Gumsu! OLAMIDE
Mere threat! That was more than a threat. If I hadn’t escaped he would have released the arrow at me. Anyway, for you I can give my life!
GUMSU
Stop joking. Seriously don’t you think we need to seperate at least for now?
OLAMIDE
What do you mean?
GUMKSU
Really let’s separate. Allow me some time to see if I can convince baba to like you.
OLAMIDE
A little challenge and you are giving up.
GUMSU
Olamide…
OLAMIDE
You need to be strong and assertive. What matters in this relationship is what you feel, what I feel. Our love shall conquer all obstacles.
Pause
OLAMIDE (CONTD.)
Don’t you love me?
GUMSU
I like you but I cannot go against my father. No woman enjoys a marriage that doesn’t have her parents’ blessings. Please understand me!
OLAMIDE
I don’t want to understand. If you love me or like me as you say, just be assertive. Let your parents know that you have made a choice and you are not ready to waver.  They would understand!
GUMSU
I’m afraid.
OLAMIDE
Don’t be! Our love shall conquer. Now take your drink and I’ll see you off to youer house.
GUMSU
Oh no! Please don’t! I don’t want to face another round of lambasting this evening. The other day I couldn’t sleep. Even as I lay on my bed, alhaji’s voice could not allow me to catch some sleep! He even said that he shall marry me off to his friend alhaji tanko! Can you imagine? The man already has three wives!
OLAMIDE
Oh no! You see why we should hurry up. You have to be strong love!
GUMSU
You say I have to be strong. Do you know you are telling me to defy my father?
OLAMIDE
Not defy. Just be a little more insistent and assertive. Make a stand. That’s all.
Brief pause
GUMSU
Olamide…
OLAMIDE
Yes love
GUMSU
Do you love me?
OLAMIDE
Of course I do. In fact I adore you!
GUMSU
Am not joking
OLAMIDE
I don’t joke with my love for you!
GUMSU
Please don’t disappoint me! Don’t make me go against my father only for you to disgrace…. You men cannot be trusted. Please don’t make me regret my love for you!
OLAMIDE
Enough of the fear! I promise to always be by you no matter the situation. Together we shall work hard to meet up with your daddy’s expectations!

ALHAJA
‘Subu hana lahi’! Alhaji take it easy…! What happened?
MALLAM
This girl was seen this afternoon, frolicking with that Yoruba boy at a bar! Kai at a bar! The daughter of Alhaji Balarabe Maigoro…at a bar! Oh I’ve suffered! Didn’t I tell you never to see him? You now defy my orders hen!
GUMSU
We were not at a bar. We were at a shawarma spot. We merely….
MALLAM
We! We! We! You hear her? She was indeed with that boy! The boy I rejected!
MALLAM picks up the horse-whip. He starts flogging GUMSU.
GUMSU

MALLAM continues to flog GUMSU mercilessly. Hajia tries to stop him to no avail she runs out for help. GUMSU faints and she is in fits.
Mallam
What is she doing? Don’t pretend, you are marrying Alhaji Tanko this Friday. No daughter of mine or son of mine would disgrace me!
AHAJA comes in with help. She sees GUMSU on the floor
ALHAJA
She is in fits Alhaji. Our daughter is dying!
The cain drops from Alhaji’s hand. He rushes towards her.
MALLAM
Please help me! The vehicle!
ALHAJA
Mallam you have killed her!
I told you to take it easy! You have killed her!
MALLAM
Shut up! Woman!
ALHAJA
You have killed her!
MALLAM
My car keys!
MALLAM goes to pick his car keys from the table. He goes out after those that help to take GUMSU to the car.
EXT. ROAD. NIGHT.
MALLAM’s car is cruising on the bridge.
MALLAM
This is what I’ve been saying. This girl does not want me to rest. Look at her now! Only god knows if she is not already pregnant for that boy! That nobody! That…! That…! That mai hauka gold digger!
ALHAJA
How can you say that Alhaji?
MALLAM
I really mean it. She must marry this Friday. I should‘ve listened to my friends when they advised me not to heed to your desire that she goes to school. That she goes to school. I should‘ve married her of years ago!
The vehicle stutters to a stop.
 MALLAM (CONTD)
Oh! What again!
MALLAM comes out to check the car engine. GUMSU looks through the car window, gently opens the door makes for the edge of the bridge.
ALHAJA
Stop her! Alhaji! Stop her! She is running off!
Mallam and Alhaja chase GUMSU. GUMSU gets to the edge of the bridge. She makes to leap off the bridge.
GUMSU
Let no one come near me or else I will jump into the canal. Baba if you insist on me marrying Mallam Tanko then you must prepare for a burial first; my burial!
Mallam tries to move sneakily towards GUMSU.
GUMSU (CONTD)
I mean it! If you move near me I shall jump into the canal!
MALLAM
 Kai! Are you crazy?
GUMSU
Yes Baba. Let me jump! What is the use of my life if must marry the one I don’t love? I won’t live with a strange man as his wife!
ALHAJA
Gumsu come down. Don’t do it! Don’t make me grief for the rest of my life! Alhaji do something!
There is a brief pause people start to gather to watch the spectacle. GUMSU sobs. She staggers down sits on the floor of the bridge. MALLAM comes to meet her. GUMSU kneels at her father’s feet.
GUMSU
Baba, please forgive me! If you truly love me, let me marry Olamide! Let me be happy. He is a Muslim. I see no reason why you hate him. No man chose his race. No man chose the economic status of his parents. You trained me to take the good decisions. In Olamide I find love and happiness. Please accept him! Please accept him! Forgive me baba!please forgive me!
MALLAM places a hand at her back
MALLAM
It’s okay. Get into the car.

OLAMIDE
You mean you did that! I can’t believe it! For us..! For me!
GUMSU
Baba didn’t actually say he accepted you or not. He merely said ‘I have heard’.
OLAMIDE
At least you’ve asserted yourself!
GUMSU
Definitely! I made him realize that I have chosen you and I would not accept another. He wasn’t happy but he knew there was no going back.
OLAMIDE
I love you. Really, I can’t wait to tell my parents the full gist!
GUMSU
Ehn…ehn!
Silence GUMSU is in a brief moment of thought
OLAMIDE
What is it?
GUMSU
So your head is swelling up now …ehn… because I cowed my father.
OLAMIDE
No! No! No! Don’t get me wrong. I am happy for us. I respect your parents especially your dad, but, the thought of you being an actor amazes me!
GUMSU
I wasn’t acting. Really!
OLAMIDE
Whatever you did, I am amazed. I love you!
OLAMIDE tries to hug GUMSU affectionately.
GUMSU
Hey! We are outside!
OLAMIDE
…And so…?
He looks around
OLAMIDE (CONTINUED)
I love you!
(Screaming)
I’m in love with Guumsuuuuuuu!
Students milling around give them a round of applause. GUMSU blushes and covers her face with her books.
OLAMIDE (CONTINUED)
Please forgive me…! Please forgive me…!
GUMSUS friends BINTA and ZAINAB come close to them
ZAIN
Hey what’s up with him?
BINTA
What was all that about?
OLAMIDE
It’s about …!
GUMSU
Don’t mind him, girls! Where are you heading?
OLAMIDE
Going away
…please forgive me! … Please forgive me…!
DERIN calls OLAMIDE. OLAMIDE goes to meet him at the other end of the quadrangle.
BINTU
This OLAMIDE would go nuts over you one day.
GUMSU
He is my silly joy! My happiness! My…! Olamide is my life!
ASABE
If you say so! But be careful. Never trust any man. Trust me…! I’ve been there!
OLAMIDE is seen exchanging pleasantries with friends. OLAMIDE’s friends all look towards GUMSU and her friends they are in greater frenzy! They wave at them.
GUMSU
What is wrong with them?
ASABE
That is what I mea. They may be catching fun at our own expense or on account of you!
BINTA
How do you know? Don’t spoil her joy!
ASABE
Men! They are wicked!
GUMSU
Not my Olamide. I use to think like that before I met Olamide
ASABE winces at GUMSU in disagreement.
ASABE
Men would make you feel happy while they are with you or while they have fun with you. But as soon as they are done they leave you…, no they throw you away like an orange leaving! Especially if they come from a rich background!
BINTU
Asabe because two men have jilted you doesn’t mean that all men are opportunists.
GUMSU
Probably you don’t study you men before giving in to them! My Olamide is caring and a good Muslim.
ASABE
Leave that matter.
GUMSU
Are you jealous?
BINTU
She is not jealous she is merely expressing concern in her own way.
ASABE
Look, Gumsu! Your so called love with Olamide is becoming psychotic. You are letting your garb off too quickly.
GUMSU
IT is not love as such. it is likeness.
Asabe
IF it is not love then what would you do when you get to the realm of love.
BINTA
Gumsu this is not how to play this game
GUMSU
What game?
BINTA
We fear what will happen if Olamide disappoints you!
GUMSU
Olamide would not do such thing.
BINTA
He is a Yoruba man! You can never trust them!
ASABE
Who knows, he may have a wife stashed up in his home town waiting for him to graduate!
GUMSU
I’ve been to his parents. I would’ve noticed if there was a ‘wife stashed up’ for him!
BINTA
You’ve been to his home! Wonderful!
BINTA and ASABE exchange glances give themselves a big hi five.
ASABE
You’ve really gone far. Mind you the parents may connive in hiding the girl while you are there.
BINTA
‘Abi’
GUMSU
That cannot be!
ASABE
Ok accepted, you like him try at least to have another boyfriend so you may have an option in case he disappoints you. An arewa man of substance is more like it. As such even if he disappoints you you will not be overwhelmed.
GUMSU
‘Subuhana lahi’. Look I don’t like this discussion!
ASABE
Olamide is the first man I’ve seen you with and trust me first love don’t last.
GUMSU
My first love shall last! Insha Allah
BINTU
That is the point! If you open your heart you may see better options!
GUMSU
Even you my friends! Love does not doubt. Love does not suspect love trusts! That is what we have together! The future will prove us right
GUMSU packs her books gets away angrily. GUMSU’s friends trail after her.

EXT. CAMPUS QUADRANGLE. DAY.DERIN and OLAMIDE are conversing they burst into laughter.
DERIN
Imagine being chased with a arrow! Is it a zulu war?

DERIN
Guy I hope with all these dramatics, I hope you have gone to clear the field!
OLAMIDE
What field?
DERIN
Surely you must have done that!
OLAMIDE
Done what?
DERIN
Done it! Stupid!
Pause
OLAMIDE (CONTD)
Oh that!
OLAMIDE looks the other way
She is not ready yet.
DERIN
O-o-o-oh my God! What is all the risk for then?
OLAMIDE
She is a virgin. We want to keep it that way until our wedding night!
DERIN
Sharrap! How do you know? Have you inspected her? Even if she is that is even the more reason why you should get there before another man gets the glory!
OLAMIDE
Glory!
DERIN
Yes now!
OLAMIDE
We are preserving our purity or as you say glory for our wedding night. That is the way god wants it!
DERIN
Stop that rubbish! No girl or woman will easily give in to your advances. You got to wrench it from them! It is after you will see the glory manifests! She’ll love you for e-e-e-ver!
OLAMIDE
Is that so! Please let me be!
DERIN
Don’t be deceived she wants it as much as you desire it. If you don’t take action then…! What if she eventually looses interest, who loses? Make hay while the sun shines.
OLAMIDE is silent in deep thought. DERIN pats OLAMIDE
DERIN (CONTD)

OLAMIDE drinks the stuff.
OLAMIDE
(OLAMIDE gives the glass to a guest).
Please help me!
BINTU comes to OLAMIDE and GUMSU
BINTU
Hello lover boy! Gumsu. The girls wanna dance with you. Excuse us boy@!

OLAMIDE smiles, He looks on as BINTU and GUMSU stagger into the crowd. DERIN taps OLAMIDE on the shoulder.

OLAMIDE

OLAMIDE
How is my angel this morning?
GUMSU
(Looking intently at OLAMIDE)
You raped me!
OLAMIDE
OLAMIDE freezes
What!
GUMSU
You raped me! …took advantage of me…! …raped me!
OLAMIDE
…but you…!  I thought you were ready!
GUMSU
No…!
OLAMIDE puts the tray down on the floor gently moves closer to GUMSU
OLAMIDE (CONTD)
I thought…you are ready!
GUMSU
No…! I trusted you drugged me and raped me!
OLAMIDE
Wide eyed
Me…! But you said you wanted me! …That, I should comfort you. Your friends were there! You wanted to be alone with me!
GUMSU
I didn’t ask you to rape me! You are wicked!
OLAMIDE
This is becoming serious. Please listen.
GUMSU
I would not listen! You took advantage of my weakness and you stole my innocence, my dignity, my pride! Why? …Olamide why? Why did you decide to humiliate me like this? …why?
